Who can bring in a mediator in a jewelry dispute?
Either party can bring in a mediator, consumer or retailer. The other party has the right to not speak with a mediator or decline to participate in the process, however we find that most people are reasonable and find this to be a quick avenue to resolution of problems.
How long have you been mediating jewelry and gemological disputes?
Since 1992.
Do you have Lawyers on staff?
No. Our staff consists of mediators who specialize in resolving retail jewelry issues. We have worked within the jewelry industry for many years, have conducted classes with retailers to avoid problems, have represented consumers who have had problems with their purchase and want a resolution without needing to go to court. The reality is that going to court, hiring an attorney and taking time off from work far excede the costs of most jewelry items. Most problems when looked at objectivly are easily resolved to all parties satisfaction at a minimum of cost and time.
Do you have Gemologist/Appraisers on staff?
Yes we do. All of our gemologist/Appraisers are graduates of GIA and have many years of experience within the jewelry industry in some of the most robust markets in the world. The grading standards strictly adhere to GIA standards which are accepted worldwide. We also have access to some of the industries top authorities in the gemological and jewelry industry. All items which are involved in mediation will be evaluated by one of our appraisers to give a solid base on resolution of conflict.
What do you charge for the entire process?
This is negotiable and will be discussed at time of initial contact. In general costs that will be incurred will include shipping & insurance charges of items evaluated, appraisal costs, an hourly fee for the mediator. The majority of cases average out to be $120.00 total. If a dispute does go to court the appraiser may charge an additional fee for court time and travel. Please remember, our goal is to keep disputes out of court, keep costs minimal and resolve the problem quickly.
Is there ever a time where the item doesn't need a gemological workup?
Yes. In many instances disputes can be resolved with a few phone calls to both parties. In this case there is a $10.00 fee for service. Our goal is rapid resolution of problems at a minimum of cost.
